Is Cataract Surgery Safe? What to do before and after the surgery?

In most cases, Cataract surgery is generally a cost-effective surgery and usually a safe procedure. It is a procedure to remove the lens of the eye to replace it with an artificial lens. Cataract surgery is recommended by a doctor when cataracts affect the eyes’ lens to become cloudy and affect your vision. Cataracts can result from many conditions, but its major cause is age-related macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy.

The average laser cataract surgery price in the U.S. can range from $3,600 to $6,000 per eye. If you choose an advanced technology lens for correcting astigmatism, there can be an additional cost of $500 or $1,000 per eye. Many times cataract surgery is covered by insurance and Medicare. Therefore, it is a cost-effective surgery for most people. But in case your cataract surgery price is not fully covered by insurance, you should explore other financing options like - CareCredit financing or HSAs, etc..

Before the cataract surgery

A week before the surgery, your doctor will perform an ultrasound and some other tests. These tests are to determine the size of your eye and to determine what lens you will require. If you want an advanced technology lens, you may have to go through additional tests to determine your eligibility.

You will be required to make follow-up visits to the doctor before the day of the procedure.

It takes a minimum of 48 hours for recovery in most cases. Therefore, you should make some arrangements in advance with friends or family to drive you home.

You may be instructed not to eat or drink anything 12 hours before your cataract surgery. Also, avoid consuming any alcohol a day before the surgery.

Your doctor may also advise you to temporarily stop taking any medication as some medications can increase your bleeding risk during the procedure.

If you have any doubts and questions, don’t be afraid to ask your doctor.

When everything is prepared, your cataract surgery will proceed smoothly. The Cataract surgery procedure is not a long one. You can go home in a few hours after the surgery.

After the cataract surgery

After the cataract procedure is done, it will take a few days for you to recover. Your vision will be blurry in the beginning, as your eyes will take some time to heal. You can start experiencing an improved and clear vision after a few days.

You will have to visit your doctor after 2-3 days of the surgery. After that, your doctor may ask you to come next week to monitor cataract surgery’s success.

Your eyes may feel itchy afterward, but you should avoid rubbing your eyes.

You should wear glasses or eye patches
for a few days after the surgery as directed by your doctor.

Make sure to wear an eye protection patch for sleeping for a few days during your recovery.

Use some eye drops regularly as recommended by the doctor.
